Yassin assassination undermines Arafat

Article Abstract:

Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, a Hamas leader and a potent Islamic was killed with two of his bodyguards on 22 March 2004 when AH-64 Apache attack helicopters fired three missiles at the party. As a result the pressure for retaliation was high and the political fallout within Palestinian territories could further erode President Yasser Arafat's status.

Syria and Iraq find common cause

Neighboring countries, Iraq and Syria, are putting aside long-standing differences and disputes, and are attempting to form an alliance. The two countries share a resentment of Israel and the United States.

Sharon stonewalls Assad peace overture

The Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon rejected the peace negotiations proposal by Syrian President Bashar Assad. Sharon does not intend to give up the Golan Heights, in part because of its military value.
