Hochschule fur Film und Fernsehen (Babelsberg)

Article Abstract:

East Germany's Hochschule fur Film und Fernsehen has to reorient its policies and curriculum because of political and technological changes. German reunification makes it imperative that the school create relationships with private and semi-private television stations in the West. New technology enables the school to produce short television programs, but at the same time makes specialized courses necessary. Script writing is gaining dominance while documentary filmmaking is losing popularity. Meanwhile, the school continues to give media-specific training, focusing on theory and history in film and television production courses.

Adela Sequeyro, Mexican film pioneer

Article Abstract:

The rise of two Mexican women directors, Elena Sanchez Valenzuela and Adela Sequeyro, was witnessed during the years between 1932 and 1937 when creative experimentation and female participation in the film industry were encouraged. Sequeyro was born in Veracruz in 1901 and made her debut as producer, director and script writer with the film 'Mas alla de la muerte' (Beyond Death). Her second film, 'Diablillos de arrabal,' was probably inspired by the 'La pandilla' (The Gang) series. As both her ventures failed, she was forced to return to being a journalist. She died in Mexico city in December 1992 at the age of 91.
