Article Abstract:

Power is wasted when consumer electronic devices are in standby operation mode and are not in use. Cordless-phone base stations, battery chargers, VCR clocks, and devices using remote controls draw current whenever they are plugged in. The average household uses about 50 watts of standby energy, adding up to 438 kWh per year. That is about two-thirds of the power used by a newer refrigerator.

There is a convergence between computer technology and stereo systems and peripherals, such as DVD players.
