'Veritable Dunghills': professor child and the broadside

Article Abstract:

Ballad singers are often depicted in contemptuously in print, but also in pictures. Hogarth's famous engraving of a hanging in Tyburn around 1760 shows contempt for a ballad singer as well as drawings by Rowlandson around 1810. The images are mimicked in literature by Shakespeare's, Jonson and in George Eliot's novel Felix Holt.
