Whither (and when) DVD?

Article Abstract:

Format disagreements and copyright problems have delayed the introduction of DVDs (Digital Video Disc) until late 1996. Manufacturers must decide whether to standardize the single or double sided format before production begins. DVD offers clearer pictures and more special effects options than video tape.

The $549 PCD 870 plays both standard audio CDs and transmits visuals to both standard and HDTV screens. Its highest resolution provides acceptable TV picture quality, but photo artists will require HDTV resolution. Its pannable programmable remote control is a big plus.
