168 Years Later, a New Night at This Opera

Article Abstract:

The New York City Opera's Sep. 13, 2003 performance of 'Lucia di Lammermoor' will use soprano Jennifer Welch-Babidge's six-month pregnancy to underscore the torment of frustrated lovers Lucia and Edgardo. Director James Robinson has found no reason to?conceal Welch-Babidge's condition for her City Opera debut. Without changing the libretto or story, Robinson will let the pregnancy serve as a subtext for Lucia's brother Enrico's anger towards Edgardo, his chief power rival, and for part of her motivation for killing her husband Arturo on their wedding night.
