General Motors Chmn Robert Stempel resigned after a power struggle with the GM board. Stempel had announced some reform measures and plant closings, but agreed to ample benefits for laid-off employees. New Chmn John Smale is known to focus strictly on business, and some analysts say GM faces a risky future.

Robert Eaton, president of GM Europe, was named to succeed Lee Iacocca as chairman of Chrysler Corp. In 1991, GM Europe posted a $2.3-billion profit under Eaton's management, while GM as a whole lost $5.1 billion.
