Flinn was granted a general discharge in a highly publicized court martial over her adulterous affair with the civilian husband of a female airman at Minot Air Force Base, ND. Her case aroused a controversy over fair treatment of women in the military, following several other male sex scandals.

The Congress Party lost control of India's government in the May 1996 elections, prompting Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao to resign. The Hindu nationalist party Bharatiya Janata Party won the most seats, but not a clear majority. A coalition government is likely.
