A new species of extinct imperial pigeon (Ducula: Columbiade) from Henderson Island, Pitcairn Group

Article Abstract:

The study uses the abundant fossil material excavated from the late Quaternary deposits on Henderson Island, Pitcairn Group of the South Pacific Ocean to analyze and describe the characteristics of a new species of the extinct Ducula pigeon. The reduced wing features of the found species differentiate it from other extanct Ducula and hence add another name to the list of the animals that have disappeared after the arrival of man on one of the more isolated islands and island groups in the Pacific.

New penguin remains from the Pliocene of Northern Chile

Article Abstract:

The research describes a new species of fossil penguins from a Pliocene level of the Bahia Inglesa Formation, northern Chile, the remains of which clearly refers to the living genus Pygoscelis and share several characters with extinct species of the genus. The analysis reveals that the trend towards global cooling at the end of Neogene must have resulted in cold enough temperatures and suitable feeling conditions for the colonies of these penguins to be established in the southern Chile.

A new raptorial bird from the Middle Eocene of Messel, Germany

Article Abstract:

The study describes and focuses upon a new raptorial bird, Masillaraptor parvunguis from the Middle Eocene of Messel, Germany, which is proven to be a fairly terrestrial bird and has long legs, weak claws and a beak without a strongly hooked tip. Though the specimens and the results obtained from them give a lot of information about the bird, the stomach contents were still not preserved, hence giving no direct hints on its diet system.
