A burning issue throughout Canada is the continuing movement within the province of Quebec to break off from Canada and become a sovereign nation. A poll on the topic shows most Canadians do not think Quebec will go through with secession though it would not be a total surprise.

'Plan B' hits a chord; the poll supports Ottawa's tougher line with Quebec

Article Abstract:

Results of a 1997 poll indicate that Quebecers and other Canadians feel more strongly than in 1996 that sovereignty for Quebec is unlikely. The federal government's tougher line on independence for Quebec is the reason for the shift.
