The search for type wisdom

Article Abstract:

Type-related business can be divided into the old guard that pursues the selling of machines and publishing systems, and the new guard that is actively involved with type development and type support. This knowledge shift is a result of the emergence of the electronic publishing and personal computer industries. The introduction of page-description languages, publishing software and laser printers separates typefaces and typesetting from machines. New guard companies such as Bitstream, Adobe Systems, and International Typeface Corporation (ITC) are all knowledgable about the industry and can answer typographic questions. The old guard companies license original typefaces to most type sources and continue to make profits even if mind-share recognition has diminished. Ultimately, the resources and skills have shifted without hurting the market or diminishing typographic skills.

Slap on Factor Four

Article Abstract:

Some newly constructed buildings on higher education campuses have taken environmental factors, such as sustainability, into consideration. Both the Docklands Campus at the University of East London, England, and the Jubilee Campus at Nottingham Universities, Nottingham, England, have been built on reclaimed land. They have also been designed to save energy. Royal Institute of British Architects Architect Amory Lovins has put forward the idea of 'Factor Four' which alludes to improving productivity and cutting energy use in architectural design.
