Magazine pages to act as Net portals

Article Abstract:

Digimarc Corp is offering a new technology which would enable magazines to embed Web access data on their pages. Some 160 publications with 150 million readers have already licensed Digimarc's technology. Readers who want to buy advertised products or acquire more information about articles would place in front a PC camera specially marked pages. The camera would then read a digital watermark which in turn, will divert the PC's Internet browser to a specific Web site.

High-speed lines face slow going

Article Abstract:

Telephone companies are facing stiff competition from cable operators in providing high-speed lines to customers who want faster Internet services at home. Telephone firms are expected to have 1.5 million subscribers for their telephone digital subscriber line by the end of 2000 even if they are experiencing installation problems. Meanwhile, cable operators will have 2.4 million subscribers for their cable modem, which may become a standard in homes if the problems of telephone companies continue.
