AT&T withdraws June 1 rate hike after criticism - for now

Article Abstract:

AT and T Corp has decided not to push through with an increase in its basic rate that would affect an estimated 30 million consumers in the US. The company, which implemented the increase on Jun 1, 2000, raised its basic rates by $0.29 as part of an effort by both AT and T and the Federal Communications Commission to reduce telephone service costs. AT and T said that adverse reaction by the public to the move is part of the reason for the plan's discontinuation.
