Aetna plans to split, turns down takeover

Article Abstract:

Aetna Life and casualty Co plans to split into two publicly traded companies by Dec 31, 2000, to bolster its stock market value. The announcement came on the heels of its announced decision to decline a $70- per-share takeover offer from ING Group and Wellpoint Health Networks. The split will require regulatory approval. The insurer also plans to sell some international assets that do not fit in with its either its health care or financial services operations.

Insurer's Web site speeds sign-up

Article Abstract:

General Electric's Beverly, MA-based Electric Insurance subsidiary has developed a user-friendly Internet World Wide Web site which has made filing insurance forms a virtually painless process for customers. The company formed a dedicated team who built up the site and made it more attractive and easier to use and navigate. As a result, Web business generated by the site increased from roughly 12% of total sales in Apr 1999 to roughly 45% as of Mar 2000.

Janus to spin off into holding company

Article Abstract:

Kansas City Southern (KCS) plans to fold its mutual fund business, Janus, into a holding company called Stillwell Financial. The Stillwell Financial umbrella will also include DST Systems, an information processing firm; Nelson's Money Managers, an investment firm based in the UK; and the Berger fund group. Janus officials, however, oppose the deal and, instead, are urging KCS to spin off Janus into a separate company.
