The Coming Search Wars

Article Abstract:

Google may face a greater challenge than adapting a new style of management and development when it makes its first initial public offering. Microsoft is experimenting with its own search engine Microsoft Research. Google remains the Web browser leader and a formidible competitor with 200 million daily searches by its users. It also has exploited its capability to focus ads that are based upon key words in users' searches resulting in ad sales of $1 billion in 2003 and profits of $350 million. Microsoft has made gains in Internet advertising from its partnership with Overture, a Yahoo division. Google is concerned that Microsoft will find a way to build its search engine into its Windows operating system, making it the browser of choice when users upgrade their Microsoft software.
