Air alliances lower international fares

Article Abstract:

A study by the Dept of Transportation (DOT) shows that alliances between US and European airlines have lowered international airfares and improved service for smaller cities on both sides of the Atlantic. According to the research, airline alliances have open more routes and more connecting flights, thereby lowering fares. The results are based on the DOT's study of the effects of alliances between Northwest and KLM, Delta and Sabena, Swissair and Austrian Airlines and United and Lufthansa.

UAL 'nice guy' in tough spot

Article Abstract:

UAL Corp CEO Jim Goodwin is expected to encounter problems with the company's unions. This is due to Goodwin's plans to pursue the acquisition of US Airways, a move that has been openly opposed by its two labor unions. UAL employees, who owns 55% of the airline company, were responsible for putting Goodwin at the highest post in the company. However, Goodwin believes that decision-making, such as the $4.3-billion purchase of US Airways, could not involve such a large number of people.
