Alberta power users fight TransAlta's plan for exports

Article Abstract:

TransAlta Utilities Corp.'s proposal to build a transmission line for exporting electricity to Saskatchewan is being opposed by the company's business electric customers in Alberta. The Industrial Power Consumers Association of Alberta (IPCA) said exporting electricity to Saskatchewan at a time when supply is limited would increase the price of electricity for some big businesses in Alberta and, at the same time, cause supply interruptions for others. The proposal calls for TransAlta Utilities to set up a 24-kilometer line to the Alberta-Saskatchewan border. The transmission line is expected to have a capacity to export 40 megawatts of electricity as early as March 1999.

Former Hurricane CEO defends his track record

Article Abstract:

Hurricane Hydrocarbons Ltd.'s former Chief Executive Officer John Komarnicki has countered company shareholders' accusations that he was relieved from his post in order to quiet investors who had been displeased by the company's declining stock prices. Komarnicki argued the misfortunes of the oil company have been caused by the problems encountered by the firm's operations in the developing countries, particularly in the former Soviet republic of Kazakhstan. Komarnicki, who remained a director in Hurricane Haydrocarbons' board, declined to be specific on why he resigned as CEO and president of the company.
