Microsoft pulls out of slump

Article Abstract:

The price of Microsoft Corp's shares rose 5.3% during trading in May 1, 2000 despite a proposal by the government to breakup the software company. Microsoft shares were up $3.69 to $73.44 after the close of the trading day. The stock price increase means that some investors believe that the proposed breakup will help the company. The company's shares dropped 40% since the start of the year, including a 12% decline during the last trading week in April.

Microsoft proposes curbs that open Windows a crack

Article Abstract:

Microsoft Corp on May 10, 2000 lashed out at the US government's proposal to split the software giant. In asking US District Judge Thomas Penfield Jackson to dismiss the breakup plan, Microsoft calls the proposal a 'radical' and 'misguided' attempt to 'destroy an American company that is a model of success in the high-technology arena.' As expected, Microsoft suggested an evidence-gathering process that could delay the case and proposed its own restrictions on the company's conduct.

The possibility of a negative decision on the antitrust case involving operating systems giant Microsoft Corp is expected by investors to push the software firm's stock down by 5%-10%. Federal judge Thomas Penfield Jackson upheld the view that Microsoft monopolized the market and raises the possibility of a company breakup. Microsoft's problems will help competitors such as Sun Microsystems and America Online improve their stocks.
