American Airlines is customizing its Web site on the Internet located at www.aa.com aimed at attracting more fliers. The Web site allows users to tailor the Web site to one's travel interests free of charge by simply joining its frequent-flier program accessible via on-line. A customer is provided with an electronic welcome with one's name, the balance of one's AAdvantage frequent-flier account and relevant news by entering one's AAdvantage number, a PIN from the American home page and filling up a profile that may be changed by the user at any time. The expensive Web personalizing is inherently designed to monitor travel patterns and interests.

The airline industry has continued to prosper despite signs that the US economy may be slowing down. In Jun 2000 alone, US carriers broke airline traffic records, with major US airlines flying an average 80% full. Demand for travel has been strong in the US since spring 2000 despite two fare hikes, and carriers believe the trend will continue through summer 2000. However, strong travel demand has also led to more flight delays with more planes flying.

KLM of the Netherlands and British Airways have confirmed that they are in preliminary merger negotiations.
