Amtrak plans expansion, new routes for next three years

National Railroad Passenger Corp (Amtrak) plans to expand or add long- distance routes to 21 states over the next three years. Under the plan, Amtrak will extend its route to the underserved markets of Iowa, Louisiana, Texas and Florida. The company aims to realized $65 million in added profits to speed up the rail's attempts to bec financially independent from the federal government by 2003.

'Red-letter day' for red-ink railroad

Article Abstract:

National Railroad Passenger Corp, better known as Amtrak has successfully tested a new $20 million train along a newly electrified portion of its regular Boston, MA-to-New York, NY, route. The successful week-long test has boosted the railroad's plan to launch high-speed, three-hour train service between Boston and New York and 2.5-hour service between New York and Washington, DC. Amtrak is counting on competitive city-to-city service along the Northeast corridor to help it become financially independent.
