Shockvertising jolts ad viewers

Article Abstract:

Advertisers continue to fuel the debate on free speech and offensive advertisements by using shocking themes such as nudity, capital punishment and sadomasochism. For example, the Italian clothier Benetton Group SpA's advertisement titled 'We, on Death Row,' which shows condemned inmates, has triggered legal battles with three states. Other companies that feature shocking advertisements include Emanuel Ungaro, Bijan, Abercrombie & Fitch Co and Nike Inc.

'Shockvertising' pushes envelope, risks backlash

Article Abstract:

However, practitioners of 'shock ads' are of the opinion that it is the consumers who should be the judge of an advertisement's effectiveness.

Article Abstract:

Wendy's Chmn and founder Dave Thomas continues to be featured in the restaurant chain's advertisements, contrary to the inclination of other chains to constantly change their ad campaigns. Ad critics are surprised why Thomas remains popular, having starred in Wendy's ads since 1989 with a total of almost 800 commercials. Marketing experts opine that Thomas' popularity is due to his image as approchable and honest.
