An approach with staying power

Article Abstract:

The management at AT&T's submarine systems plant in Clark, New Jersey has relied on a team approach since the late 1970s and has cut the cost of its only product by 30 percent. Michael Greenstein, engineering and quality manager, emphasizes worker participation and team integration and cites the management style as the major reason why the plant was allowed to stay open after initial plans to close it in the summer of 1992. There are currently 14 teams that are cross-functional and vertically integrated. Teams are usually comprised of between 10 and 12 people and include designers, engineers, production supervisors, lab technicians and others.

Photography and the artist

Article Abstract:

A travelling exhibition entitled 'Degas to Picasso: Painters, Sculptors and the Camera' is currently at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco, CA. This exhibition unites photographs with the sculptures, paintings, prints and drawings of 14 European artists from the 1860s to the 1910s. The two most well-known artists covered by the exhibition are Pablo Picasso and Edgar Degas. The representation of each artist and related photographs is necessarily limited, and the accompanying publication is better than the exhibition itself.

A complaint about air travel

Article Abstract:

International air travel seems to be becoming an increasingly stressful experience. Standards in first class are constantly rising, while those in the rest of the aircraft are falling. Flight attendants often get the blame if passengers experience poor service, but the real blame rests with airline managers, who try many different ways of maximizing profits. They should perhaps simply admit that they are only offering a very basic service, comparable with travelling by Greyhound Bus.
