Another problem for seal hunt: Viagra

Article Abstract:

The number of seals killed on Canada's East Coast dropped to 91,000 in 2000 from a record of approximately 280,000 in 1996, according to a report submitted to Canada's Department of Fisheries and Oceans. One of the reasons for the decline is the popularity of the male sexual dysfunction drug Viagra, which has replaced some of the demand for seal penises in Southeast Asia, where they are used to enhance virility. In 1996, according to the report, an estimated $1 mil worth of seal penises were exported from Canada. Other reasons for the decline are that the market for pelts and meat has declined, and subsidies of seal meat are no longer being given.
