Apple to sell computers priced for home market

Article Abstract:

Apple Computer Inc will announce a new product line of inexpensive Macintosh microcomputers that will target the home market and a 'family' audience. The product line, which is called Performa, will be formally introduced on Sep 14, 1992. Prices will range between $1,000 and $3,000. Apple wants to encourage the market for multimedia technologies, and the new machines will therefore include built-in Compact Disk-Read Only Memory (CD-ROM) players. Apple will also introduce new software that will target first-time buyers. An industry observer says Performa is a repackaging of Macintosh technology that could be 'wildly successful.'

Apple putting hopes on new Macintosh line

At the annual MacWorld Exhibition in San Francisco, Steve Jobs introduced Apple Computer's new Power Macintosh G4, its Power Macintosh G4 Cube, as well as a revamped version of its Mac OS X operating system. The G4 weighs 5.3 pounds, has a built-in DVD player and a 15.2-inch screen. It will sell for $2,599 to $3,997. Apple's desktop PowerMac tower computers will range from 466 to 733 megahertz and will come with rewriteable CDs. These models will cost from $1,699 to $3,499. Experts see the finished commercial version of Mac OS X as essential to the revitalization of Apple.

Changing Course, Apple Offers Low-Priced Mac for the Home

Steven Jobs, chief executive at Apple Computer Inc. introduced the new Mac Mini. The company is hoping that the new low priced computer will encourage consumers who love the iPod, to switch from their Windows PCs to the Mac Mini.
