Are Park Service policies keeping people out of the parks?

Article Abstract:

Derrick A. Crandall, President, American Recreation Coalition, fears that the visitation to the National Parks is trending downwards, and believes that increased use of technology to educate, interpret for and manage visitors through partnerships is a preferred course to enhance visitation to the parks. However, Denis Galvin, Deputy Director of National Park Service (NPS) argues that in 2004 NPS concessionaires grossed over $1 billion, surrounding gateway communities and businesses grossed over another $11 billion, all of which are attributable to national park visitors.

Budget concerns

Article Abstract:

U.S. President George W. Bush announced the formation of his Commission to strengthen Social Security in May 2001 by saying that federal budget surpluses were enough to cover any costs incurred by the transition to a partially privatized system. However, the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001 along with administration-supported tax cuts coupled with spending for counterterrorism initiatives and the war against Iraq obliterated the budget surplus.

Budget vows

Article Abstract:

Park Service managers are at the receiving hand handling difficult responsibilities with shrinking budgets under political duress since 2001. White House and Congress have slashed federal funding for daily park operations well below the requirement, and though the amount allocated for daily operations rose to more than $1 billion a year, the amount does not keep up with the inflation.
