At Issue: should the United States aid the former Soviet Union?

Article Abstract:

Opposing views on whether or not the US should give economic assistance to Russia are presented. The argument in favor of giving aid to Russia states that the US can afford to give aid and that this aid could have significant impact not only for the Russians but for world peace. The argument against aid to Russia states that it is up to the Russians to create the right climate for investments to pour into their country. Besides, the track record of US and Western aid-bankrolled projects in the Third World is very poor. It was suggested that the US pursue a policy of trade instead of economic assistance.

Should the United States be more sensitive to Russia's concerns about NATO expansion?

Article Abstract:

While some critics believe NATO expansion will cause Russia to expand its weapons system against the potential threat of its adversaries, NATO enlargement has nothing to do with US-Russian nuclear dismantlement activities including START II and future treaty negotiations. Still, others contend the US should follow the approach used after World War II and send aid to Russia, an operation that solidified the US's relationship with Germany and Japan.

Should the Russian government be involved in building the International Space Station?

Article Abstract:

Disagreement exists on whether Russia should help build the International Space Station. Supporters note that the US gains invaluable knowledge based upon Russian experience in space and with a space station. However, critics are dismayed at the delays in Russian contributions, due to the instability of the Russian economy and continuing bureaucracy. Critics thus oppose dealing with Russia's government in the space station project.
