At issue: should the United States sign a comprehensive test ban on nuclear weapons?

Article Abstract:

The controversy on nuclear test ban rages on with the US caught in the middle. The US is a major superpower whose actions have a global impact. The decision of the US to sign a nuclear test ban may have a tremendous effect on other nations. Nuclear testing, besides being very expensive, contradicts the principle of controlling the propagation of nuclear weapons. However, others argue that nuclear testing is necessary to ensure the safety of nuclear weapons already developed. Nuclear testing should not be the focal issue, but the existence of nuclear weapons.

U.S. policy in Asia

Article Abstract:

The end of the Cold War between the US and the USSR has greatly upset the balance of power. The burgeoning threat of a nuclear arms race is becoming more and more apparent among the five leading Asian countries: China, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and North Korea. One of the reasons for the rise in defense spending by these countries is due to their improved economy. The main factor however is the growing suspicions among the Asian countries. The US government is left to make a crucial decision whether or not to exert its military influence.

Superpower battleground

Article Abstract:

The Cold War had grave, often damaging, effects on most Asian countries. Although the two superpowers did not openly attack each other, they support opposite sides of conflicting Asian nations. The Korean War and Vietnam War were two examples in which the US and USSR were able to indirectly exercise their hostilities towards one another. On the other hand, US and China had disagreements over Taiwan's sovereignty. For its part, Japan was of military importance with the US due to its strategic location.
