Article Abstract:

Stories about American celebrities such as Jerry Seinfeld, Michael Jordan, Monica Lewinsky, Janet Jackson, and others run as top news in Australia. Australia has become another version of the US in that American culture has dominated every aspect of Australian identity. One Nation's Pauline Hanson blames multiculturalism for the demise of Australian identity, but others believe Australian culture and attitudes are distinctive and will remain unlike any other nation.

The mother load

Young Australian women find the workplace is ambivalent about children even though flexible work practices and family friendliness are implemented in corporate culture. School girls have shifted focus from having children later in life to having a fulltime career. Cuts in government family service programs and insecurity over employment are also influencing the decision to have children.

The rebuilding begins

Article Abstract:

The South Korean automobile industry has suffered a 53% decrease in domestic sales following the economic crisis in November, 1997. Even the 4th largest business group, Daewoo, has faired poorly, due in part to a 386.4% debt ratio. Daewoo's chairman projects a 230% debt ratio by the end of 1998.
