B.C. Hydro signs purchasing deal for new plant

Article Abstract:

British Columbia Hydro and Power Authority has agreed to an electricity purchasing deal involving a planned C$220-million co-generation power plant near Campbell River on Vancouver Island in British Columbia. Fletcher Challenge Energy and a division of Vancouver, BC-based Westcoast Energy Inc. are jointly developing the 250-megawatt Island Co-generation Project (ICP), which is being touted as the biggest privately-owned, gas-powered co-generation power facility in Canada. The energy purchasing deal calls for B.C. Hydro to purchase all electricity produced by the plant, and for Fletcher Challenge's Canadian unit to buy low-cost steam to be utilized in its nearby pulp and newsprint mill in Elk Falls, BC.
