Babes in Computerland

Article Abstract:

Computers in the classroom have been somewhat useful, but computing trends combined with educational laziness could create an educational disaster. Computers could be used in ways that undermine teaching of basic skills. Just as too much dependance on calculators has harmed the teaching of basic arithmetic, too much reliance on computers can limit basic math skills. Similarly, if children use drawing programs, they will not exercise basic drawing skills, and if they use style-checking programs that tell them whether their writing is good or bad, they will not learn writing skills. Multimedia presentations can thwart a child's desire to read and discourage use of imagination. Hypermedia does away with linear presentations of material, which undermine habits of concentration and the ability to follow and understand the unfolding of logical arguments. Computers can be effective teaching aids, but they must be used properly. Americans ask too little of computers and too little of their schools.
