Banknorth sets stage for TD's rapid US expansion: TD a bigger catch if deals allowed here

Article Abstract:

Toronto-Dominion Bank has sealed its $3.8-billion deal for Banknorth Group Inc., an acquisition that would allow rapid US expansion and make TD a more attractive partner if Canadian banks are allowed to merge. The purchase of a majority stake in the New England bank with a track record in deal making is the start of a new push into US branch banking.

Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC) World Markets Inc. is recruiting from rival dealers to replace staff lost to upstart investment dealer Genuity Capital Markets. Andrew Foote was the first person to be hired at the CIBC after his 17-year career on the equity desk at archrival RBC Dominion Securities Inc.

Bay St. takes heart as hiring resumes: MBA recruitment drives signal financial sector ending two-year hiring freeze

Article Abstract:

Canada's major banks and brokerages are hiring from Rotman School of Management and similar efforts are happening at other MBA programs that show that the financial sector is finally emerging from its two-year hiring freeze. The banks seem to be more optimistic about extending their staff.
