Before the bar of history

Article Abstract:

Presidents who finish their terms under a dark cloud often are obsessed with how history will judge them and their presidency. Although its is likely that the Senate will acquit President Bill Clinton, he will forever ponder about his legacy. It is likely that after his term in office is over he will be very active in convincing the public and historians that he was unfairly impeached and that he should be remembered as a man of peace and prosperity.

Clinton's Houdini act

Article Abstract:

The message that the public is sending in regard to President Clinton's alleged sexual affair with Monica Lewinsky is that people do not want the truth. They are much more interested in what goes on in their families and communities than what Clinton is doing in his private life. The president's approval rating went down following the story, but he gained more points in polls following the State of the Union Address.

Basking under a cloud

Article Abstract:

President Bill Clinton's lawyers defend him in the Senate as he prepares to deliver his sixth State of the Union Speech in Jan 1999 before Congress. Americans wonder whether Clinton is a president full of vision, a felon who lied under oath, or both. Despite differing opinions about his behavior, Clinton knows his political survival depends on keeping his job-approval rating high.
