Firms battle over altered food

Article Abstract:

Manufacturers of genetically modified (GM) foods as well as supermakets and restaurants face shareholder activism on the controversial issue of genetic engineering. Opponents of genetic engineering have sent food companies with proposals that would require shareholder votes on the issue. The proposals demand that companies such as Sara Lee Corp, Kroger Co and McDonald's Corp suspend the development, use and sale of GM crops and foods until proven safe for humans and the environment.

Bevy of deals bring businesses together online

Article Abstract:

Companies are pooling their buying power on the Internet to reduce costs. In some cases, companies are partnering with rivals to gain more leverage over suppliers. For example, aviation and defense companies Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Raytheon and British Aerosapace are near to establishing an electronic marketplace where they can procure materials and parts. Heinz, Unilever, Procter & Gamble, Nestle and other consumer product companies are also creating a system in which suppliers can bid and get price quotes.

Foreign connections confuse steel fight

Article Abstract:

US steel producers are lobbying against steel importations that have flooded the US market and adversely affected their businesses. But these foreign steel makers had helped the US steel industry during the last crisis by investing heavily in the domestic market and bringing in latest technology to obsolete mills. At present, many US mills are controlled by Dutch, Greek and Japanese parents or teamed up with South Korean, German and British interests.
