Beware the desperate politician bearing tax gifts

Article Abstract:

Australian Prime Minister John Howard anticipated he would introduce the tax reform package when his government is 10 points ahead of Labor in polls. However, his government in 1998 is behind in polls and he relies heavily on the tax package to save the Coalition. His government faces this challenge at a time when its credibility is low and voters do not believe a tax package would solve all the nation's problems.

Article Abstract:

The rise in petrol prices is analyzed by keeping in view the present political situation. The high petrol prices, and the tax cuts for low and middle income earners have given rise to speculation and debate over the possibility of a leadership change, where Prime Minister, Mr. John Howard may be thinking in terms handing over the reins to Mr. Peter Costello.

Australian Prime Minister John Howard is facing an unsettling time with the introduction of the new goods and services tax, (GST). The government pledged that GST would not cause an increase in petrol prices, but is experiencing difficulties in honoring this promise.
