Big airlines officially open online outlet

Article Abstract:

Critics of online travel agency Orbitz claim it is likely to take business away from other sites that are currently outlets for travel bargains. The company, owned by the US' Big Five airlines, has been signing up 25,000 customers a week since Feb 2001. On the other hand, Orbitz is not likely to become a one-stop source for the best travel fares all the time. While it would have some of the lowest fares sold anywhere it will not sell the lowest fares for every airline. It will not also carry all 'unpublished' fares that are available to tour groups and business travelers.

GM sells trucks under scrutiny

Article Abstract:

General Motors Corp is still distributing its 1999 Chevrolet Tahoes and GMC Yukons, disregarding the finding by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that the trucks' air bags are defective and dangerous. The agency requested the carmaker to cease selling the vehicles after they failed to pass the air bag test in Feb 1999. GM said that the test was inconsequential to safety, but the agency is likely to appeal for court favor to force the company to stop selling the vehicles.

USA takes back seat to Europe in auto safety

Article Abstract:

The automobile industry in the US falls behind Europe in terms of safety regulations. The US previously led the world in auto-safety, but it has faced several problems such as the deadly impact of local airbags and the use of aging crash test dummies. Europeans, however, did not face those problems, since they utilize less forceful air bags and motorists generally take extra precaution. Europe also took advantage of new research and technology for more efficiennt tests and rules.
