DaimlerChrysler posts its first quarterly loss

Article Abstract:

DaimlerChrysler AG reported a deficit of $269 million for 4th qtr 2000, on Feb 26, 2000, its first losing quarter since 1998 when Daimler-Benz acquired Chrysler. The loss, a large drop from the $1.5-billion profit it posted for the same period in 1999, is attributed primarily to the $1.3- billion deficit posted by the company's Chrysler unit. DaimlerChrysler also announced that it will take a $3.09-billion restructuring charge for the period as part of ongoing efforts to return both its Mitsubishi and Chrysler units to profitability.

Vote puts OnStar under scrutiny

Article Abstract:

General Motors (GM) shareholders will vote on a proposal that would require the automaker to track traffic accidents involving vehicles equipped with its OnStar communications services. The proposal, which is being opposed by GM, spotlights increasing concern about driver distraction in cars equipped with a growing number of services: Internet access, financial services, cellphones and e-mail. OnStar is the leading in-car telematics provider.

Recalled tires pose disposal problem

Article Abstract:

Ford Motor Co and Bridgestone/Firestone Inc, faced with the recall of 6.5 million Wilderness AT, ATX and ATX II tires, are looking to dispose of the tires in an environmentally responsible manner. The companies intend to find a solution that would not involve sending a single recalled tire to a landfill. Instead, Ford and Bridgestone/Firestone are planning a move that will increase the demand for recycled rubber by fall 2000.
