Bilingual battleground

Article Abstract:

An important issue facing education policymakers in the US is whether to apply a bilingual system of education to Hispanic American children. Hispanic groups in the country agree that the bilingual education system has many inherent benefits. Critics of the system argue that it will serve as a hindrance to the cultural assimilation of Hispanic children. Education is an important tool which Hispanics can use to rise from the dregs of poverty, thus the importance of adopting an educational system which would help them accomplish this.

At issue: Do bilingual education programs help Hispanic children learn English and assimilate into American culture?

Article Abstract:

Education is a tool which Hispanic children can use to assimilate themselves into mainstream American society. The quicker and more effective the method adopted, the faster the assimilation process. The issue on the use of bilingual education as an effective teaching tool rages. Proponents argue that research has indicated bilingualism as an effective method of teaching. Some disagree saying that the research methods used to verify the effectivity of bilingualism are inadequate.

Is bilingual education losing support in the Hispanic community?

Article Abstract:

Hispanic Americans are divided on the issue of bilingual education and its efficacy in assisting student learning. While some argue that the program was implemented due to a lack of Hispanic-derived alternatives and is no longer valid, others counter that it has helped students learn English and Spanish proficiently and improved their scholastic comprehension.
