Bitove wins appeal on Pearson rent

Article Abstract:

The food concessionaires at the Lester B. Pearson International Airport will no longer have to pay C$22.7 million in past and future rents after the Ontario Court of Appeal overturned a 1995 court decision by Mr. Justice Sydney Lederman of the Ontario Court's General Division. According to the three three appeal court judges, Lederman "misapplied" legal tenets and "misapprehended" facts. The new ruling also ordered Transport Canada, which owns the airport, to pay Bitove Corp. the legal costs of the original trial and the appeal.

Airlines play down talks on international routes

Article Abstract:

Air Canada and Canadian Airlines International Ltd. have admitted that they are discussing new international routes with each other. However, the airlines denied reports that they were planning to carve up access to international destinations. Air Canada and Canadian Airlies said that the two companies only discussed matters such as route allocations, airport landing slots, air navigation, airport management and safety standards.

Senior CAI executives received 1% raises in 1998

Article Abstract:

Top officials and staff of Canadian Airlines International Ltd (CAI) were given a 1% pay increase in 1998. The pay raise did little to recoup the 10% pay cut that was imposed on the firm's executives and staff during its restructuring in 1996. CEO Kevin Benson received $320,650 in 1998 while the base pay of CAI's senior vps was $229,750. Executive salaries in CAI are much lower than in other Canadian and US airlines.
