Bloodshed and terror: a Canadian envoy will try to stop a new war in Africa

Article Abstract:

The UN appointed Chretien as a special envoy to Central Africa, which is undergoing renewed violence between rival Tutsi and Hutu ethnic groups. Chretien previously served as Canadian ambassador to Zaire, Burundi and Rwanda from 1978-81, and is familiar with the region's problems.

Ronald Cross speaks about the role he played in the 1990 confrontation between a group of Oka Indians and the Canadian government. Cross was convicted of 20 charges for his part in the incident, but in Mar 1993 was out on bail pending his appeal.

The battle of the bridge
