Bluetooth Wireless stumbles at the starting gate; unlucky timing and the normal growing pains of a new technology

Article Abstract:

Ericsson Mobile Communications AB's Bluetooth wireless technology has taken longer to develop than the company and its supporters originally thought. Bluetooth, a wireless technology chip which allows wireless communication between electronic devices within personal-area networks, is supported by companies such as Nokia, IBM, Toshiba and Intel. The initial product was hampered by its high price and the decline in consumer demand for handheld devices and cellular phones. Now the technology has a competitor in Wi-Fi, a similar technology supported by Microsoft, Lucent, Apple 3Com and others.
