Boeing moves headquarters to Chicago

Boeing has chosen Chicago, IL, as the site of its new world headquarters, ending 85 years of residence in Seattle, WA. CEO Phil Condit said the relocation to Chicago was a strategic business decision, as part of plans to build a better and bigger Boeing. Chicago was very much elated in having won Boeing, the US' 15th-largest corporation, with $51 billion in revenues. Boeing is expected to contribute $5 billion to the state's economy over the next 20 years, according to Illinois Gov George Ryan.

The Los Alamos National Bank gave reason that it deserved to be a recipient of the Baldridge Award after the bank offered $5,000 no-interest loans to residents of White Rock and Los Alamos, NM, whose houses have been damaged by the Cerro Grande forest fire. The bank also negotiated with Fannie Mae for the suspension of mortgage payments on houses destroyed by the fire and saw to it that fire victims could avail of new mortgage loans at the same interest rates.

Gas meter removal results in toxic mercury spills

Article Abstract:

Federal and state officials in the Chicago, IL, area are overseeing a cleanup of toxic mercury that involves as many as 200,000 homes. The problem began in Jul 2000, when Nicor Gas started replacing its old gas pressure meters with new outdoor models. The accident has prompted gas utilities all over the US to review their own meter-removal records. Long- term exposure to mercury can cause kidney and brain damage.
