More altered corn found in taco shells

Article Abstract:

Western Family Foods Inc's taco shells have been found to contain an unapproved variety of genetically altered corn in testing conducted for anti-biotechnology groups. According to the Genetically Engineered Food Alert group, the taco shells, labeled with the name of the Tigard, OR- based company, were bought in Eugene, OR, in late Sep 2000. Two other firms, Kraft Foods Inc and Mission Foods Corp, recalled taco shells after they tested positive for StarLink corn, a variety not approved for human consumption.

Estimates of the cost to the company range form $100 million to $1 billion. The Starlink corn had to be recalled because it was used to manufacture food products, which the government did not authorize since the corn is not fit for human consumption.
