'Romance of the air' begins

Article Abstract:

DC Air will be established as a byproduct of the $4.3-billion union of US Airways and United Airlines. The company will be owned by Black Entertainment Television founder and CEO Robert Johnson and will have the distinction of being the first black-owned US airline in 13 years. Johnson, who will have the honor of being the latest billionaire to venture into the airline business, is confident that DC Air will not repeat the performance of its predecessors.

Brit wants U.S. right of way; CEP of Virgin seeks Congress' OK to start airline

Article Abstract:

Virgin Group CEO Richard Branson is on a mission to convince US Congress that its carrier should be allowed to compete with American-owned fliers because of the less expensive fares it offers. US laws have barred over 25% foreign ownership of carriers because of national security consideration. This premise has kept the British-owned Virgin Group, which operates Virgin Atlantic and Virgin Express airlines, from flying within US borders. Branson is in a bind since he needs to have control of no less than 51% of the Virgin brand. He said he hopes the increasing fares, which have pestered corporate travel departments in the US, will help his cause.

Discount carriers land in Northeast

Article Abstract:

A number of discount airlines have introduced service in the Northeast, moves that are expected to bring down airline fares in the region to as low as $90. US Airways, which introduced its low-fare MetroJet service in Buffalo, Rochester and Albany in New York in October 1998, said it will expand its low-fare service in the Northeast by adding a round trip flight from Hartford, CT, to Fort Lauderdale, FL, for $150. Other discount carriers that service Northeast include Delta Express and Southwest Airlines.
