Buying into the farm: pay dirt

Article Abstract:

In Australia agriculture has been overlooked for a long time as an investment by the large retirement (superannuation) funds, or which there are some 4000. The contribution of the economy of the rural sector is down to under 4% in 1998, vs 10% in the late 1960s. Some investments made in the sector turned out badly, not helping the image. Union-based industry superannuation funds seem to be finding the agriculture sector interesting and there are two new offerings in managed agricultural investments, Warakirri Asset Management and Prudential Pastoral Trust. NM Rural Enterprises will soon be open to all super funds, not only to National Mutual statutory funds.

Fair exchange?

Article Abstract:

The Australian Stock Exchange (ASX) has listed on itself and will be traded like other corporations. There is concern that a few big organizations will corner the shares and control the ASX. The tough eligibility rules have already made companies such as Gowing Bros and Auspine ineligible for the All Ordinaries index. The step is an attempt to break broker-domination as this threatens the ASX's market position.
