CAW hires consultant to study possible bid for Giant mine

Article Abstract:

The Canadian Auto Workers (CAW) union has announced its plan to acquire Royal Oak Mines Inc's Giant gold mine from a receiver. The labor union has tapped Roscoe Postle Associates Ltd to conduct a detailed study of the mine's historical gold production and reserve data to determine its economic potential. CAW said that it secured $20,000 from the Northwest Territories government and $50,000 from the Federal Dept of Indian and Northen Affairs to hire Roscoe Postle.

Argentina confident it can get better takeover offer

Article Abstract:

Argentina Gold Corp of Vancouver, British Columbia, has announced that it remains confident of getting a better takeover offer either from Barrick or another interested mining company. The announcement came after the expiry of Barrick's C$5-per-share offer on midnight of Feb 8, 1999. Barrick, which said that its offer its contingent on at least 50.1% of the shares being tendered to its bid, is eyeing the target company's Veladero gold project in Argentina.

Placer Dome hikes gold estimate by 4%

Article Abstract:

Vancouver, Brit Colum-based Placer Dome Inc. is expectant that its global gold output for 1998 will be at 2.8 million ounces. Placer Dome's forecasted global gold production is reflective of a 4% improvement from the past projections on the firm's international output. Placer Dome is also expectant that its per-ounce expenditures for its present gold-production operations will drop from C$170 to C$160.
