CBS captures premiere-week prize

Article Abstract:

CBS obtained in the last week of September 1998 its first premiere-week award since 1993. The network had the week's top-rated new drama, L.A. Doctors and the Country Music Assocaition awards, with an average 14.8 million viewers for the week. Rivals NBC and ABC claimed 14.2 million viewers and 12.6 million viewers respectively, while Fox had 8.6 million viewers for the week. According to CBS, part of the strong following came from the showing of National Football League games.

Keeping Zippo's flame eternal

Article Abstract:

George Duke, co-owner of Zippo Manufacturing, maker of the iconic metal cigarette lighter, acknowledges that with smoking on the decline the demand for his company's lighters will definitely decrease. Company officials agree that the iconic status of the lighter is not enough to see an increase in sales and hence are looking at other products as well as manufacturing higher end products unrelated to tobacco to cater to the demands of very discerning customers.

Government agencies see truth in polygraphs

Article Abstract:

The Supreme Court has ruled against the use of polygraph evidence in court in its 1998 ruling. However, government agencies continue to use polygraph exams to make decisions regarding the hiring or termination of their personnel. Among the agencies that rely heavily on polygraph tests are the CIA, National Security Agency, Dept of Defense, Treasury Dept and some of the largest police agencies in the country.
