Cable firms may miss CRTC deadline

Article Abstract:

Canadian cable companies may miss the Sept 1, 1999 deadline set by the Canadian Radio-television and Telcommunications Commission for them to set up four new specialty digital channels. CRTC awarded the cable companies four digital license in 1996 under the conditions that new specialty channel will be required to go on the air as soon as the cable companies launched digital services to 15% of their subscribers. The four digital channels are ROB TV, Star TV, Canadian Learning Television and Talk TV.

Has Royal Oak hit rock bottom?

Article Abstract:

Royal Oak Mines Inc of Kirkland, WA, remains optimistic despite its bankruptcy protection filing in Ontario, Canada, under the Companies Creditors Arrangement Act. Company CEO Margaret Witte asserted that business will proceed as normal and employee wages and benefits will not be affected. However, several analysts are not as optimistic as Witte, saying that the bankruptcy protection is a last-ditch effort to salvage its deteriorating business.

Highland Valley proposal offers employee payments

Article Abstract:

The Highland Valley copper mine in British Columbia has tabled what it claims to be its last and best offer to around 1,000 striking employees. Acceptance of the proposal, which includes increased pensions and lump sum payments, may avert the mine's complete shutdown in winter 1999 as planned. The mine is a joint venture of Cominco Ltd, Teck Corp, Highmont Mining Co and Rio Algom Ltd.
