Castro's next move: is Cuba's "maximum leader" mellowing?

Article Abstract:

Fidel Castro is showing some signs of liberalizing his strict regime. Some observers see greater freedom of worship and some movement toward a market economy. Others, however, feel events such as Pope John Paul II's visit to Cuba in Jan 1998 is Castro's desperate attempt to find support for his failing government. The US embargo on Cuban products continues in 1998, although some legislators suggest sanctions oppress the poorest Cubans and provide Castro with a propaganda tool.

School choice debate: are tuition vouchers the answer to bad public schools?

Article Abstract:

A growing number of states are considering tax-funded school vouchers to allow poor families an opportunity to send their children to private schools. Advocates of the voucher system believe it offers the poor a good alternative to the failing public schools and may benefit public schools by generating competition. Opponents fear the voucher system will take much-needed funding away from public schools and violate the First Amendment separation of church and state.

Fighting over animal rights: Has public support for the movement peaked?

Article Abstract:

Most people believe in using animals for medical research even though the animal rights movement has grown and gained importance. People tend to support part of the animal rights' campaign, such as not using animals to test cosmetics and not wearing fur. However, AIDS activists have become very vocal in opposing animal rights supporters who aggressively criticized the transplantation of baboon bone marrow into an AIDS patient.
