Regulating nonprofits: are tax-exempt groups too political?

Article Abstract:

There is increasing confusion over what tax-exempt groups can legally do when it comes to advocacy, lobbying and political activity according to Peter Shiras, sr vp for Independent Sector, a group representing 800 nonprofit groups. Tax law and election law are inconsistent. Even inside nonprofits there is uncertainty according to Oliver Tessier, exec director of the Support Center, a group that offers workshops for nonprofits. Charities, the largest group among nonprofits, can lobby only within limits and cannot be involved in partisan political activity.

Pursuing the paranormal: what's behind the new interest in the unexplained?

Article Abstract:

The public is showing a renewed interest in the paranormal and UFOs, which some worry can be attributed to a loss of respect for science and a wariness of government. UFO enthusiasts believe the government has covered up evidence which would prove a flying saucer crashed near Roswell, NM, in 1947. The US Air Force in 1995 released a report stating the wreckage was probably from secret radar balloons and radar reflectors which were being used at the time to measure Soviet atomic tests.

First Ladies: what is the proper role for the President's spouse?

Article Abstract:

Hillary Rodham Clinton is the most powerful First Lady in US history, but her power has also brought controversy and a questioning of the role a president's spouse should assume. Mrs. Clinton's unfavorable rating reached 44% in April 1996, although millions admire her independence and accomplishments. The First Lady issue could affect the presidential election, with Elizabeth Dole, wife of Republican candidate Bob Dole, appealing more to traditionalists.
