Challenges in language, culture, and modality: Translating English measures into American Sign Language

Article Abstract:

An attempt was made to translate self-report measures related to modifiable cardiovascular disease risk factors from written English into American Sign Language (ASL) and to evaluate the equivalence of the new ASL versions with the original English version of the measures. The results support use of the derived etic strategy for translating measures from their original language into new languages and also, for changing modalities from written form to other modalities, such as visual-manual modality of ASL.

African American women, metabolic syndrome, and national cholesterol education program criteria: A pilot study

Article Abstract:

The degree of agreement between two definitions of the metabolic syndrome (MetS), described by the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) and the NCEP criteria with the addition of a marker of insulin resistance in a sample of African American women (AAW), is determined. As there is evidence that insulin resistance develops before many other indicators, the addition of a marker of insulin resistance might assist in earlier identification of AAW at high risk for cardiovascular disease.

Culturally tailored diabetes education program for Chinese Americans: A pilot study

Article Abstract:

The feasibility and acceptability of a culturally appropriate diabetes management program tailored to Chinese Americans with type 2 diabetes and preliminary outcomes of the intervention were assessed. The findings suggest that culturally tailored diabetes management might be effective in Chinese Americans with type 2 diabetes, thus recommending further study with a larger sample size and a control group.
